3 Easy (and Important!) Dry Winter Lip DIY Treatments

Winter is a magical time of year: curling up with hot chocolate in front of the fire or for a cozy movie night. Perhaps you’re a winter sport lover—hitting the slopes, lacing up the skates, or strapping on snowshoes and spending as much time outdoors as you can. But no matter how you spend your winter, you’re practically guaranteed to suffer one of its unpleasant side effects: dry lips.

Whether it’s the indoor dry air or the cold blustering windy weather outside—or often the combination of the two--our skin takes a beating during winter, especially sensitive lips.

But don’t turn to the petroleum byproducts. You can treat and prevent dry and chapped lips with a few simple DIYs.

  1. Make a lip scrub: Not ideal if you have severely broken skin on the lips, but a gentle sugar scrub can help remove dryness and increase moisture. Blend a tablespoon of coarse sugar with two tablespoons rich oil such as jojoba, almond, or even olive oil. (Note: coconut oil is solid below 76 degrees F and is therefore not ideal for this purpose.) Gently massage the scrub over lips to remove dry skin. The oil brings much-needed moisture to your pout. Great pre-bedtime treatment, especially if you sleep with the heat on.
  1. Aloe rub: This one is super simple, particularly if you already have an aloe plant in your home. If not, you can find fresh aloe leaves often in the produce section of the supermarket. Break open an aloe leaf and the inside should be clear and sticky—this is the good healing properties you want. You can rub the aloe straight from the leaf gently onto your lips for a hydrating lip “mask.” Aloe has a bitter taste but it is totally edible, so don’t worry if you ingest some. Leaf the gel on your lips for 15-20 minutes before rinsing. This treatment is particularly beneficial to lips that are windburn or excessively dry. Aloe can be used on broken skin but may cause a slight stinging. Discontinue and consult with your doctor if it makes your condition worse.
  1. Coconut-Cucumber lip mask: This is another super simple DIY lip treatment you can whip up in no time. Cucumbers are extremely hydrating and coconut oil is a fantastic moisturizer. It also contains antimicrobial properties, which can help ward off any infection as a result of dryness or cracking. Peel and seed about an inch of cucumber. Chop fine or mash with a fork. Add in a tablespoon of coconut oil (solid is fine for this purpose). Mix until well combined. Spread generously on lips and leave for five minutes. Repeat as necessary.
