4 Fun Outdoor Adventures Perfect For Summer

As William Shakespeare said “the earth has music for those who listen.” Get outside and let the sounds, sights and smells of nature soothe your mind and body. From the Vitamin D to the endorphin hit from getting active, the benefits of getting outdoors are numerous and far-reaching. Here are a few easy ways to get into nature and make the most of all this beautiful season has to offer.

Get out on the water

Rent a motorboat for the day, grab a kayak or two or hop into a canoe. In our hometown Boston, you can head to the Charles River and rent a paddleboard or kayak to head out onto the river against the glistening city skyline. If you have a day, take a road trip to the coast and spend the day sailing or boating out on the ocean. The possibilities are endless, all it takes is a little creativity and a sense of adventure.

Take a hike

Hiking is good for both your body and your mind. The cardio is great to boost your circulation, improve your cardiovascular functioning and kick up your mood.  Plus, seeing the world from way up high from time to time can really put things in perspective. Not all trails are created equal so make sure to do your research before you head out. If you're looking for a good view, search for that. If you're looking for a child-friendly one, make sure you check for that. Pack a picnic for the top and a water bottle with a filter to reduce your plastic waste. Make sure to maintain a strict carry-in carry-out policy - don’t leave your waste behind. Here's a list of some good trails around the Northeast.

Head to the beach

Whether on a lake, a pond or the ocean, consider hitting the sand at least a few times this sunny season. Going to the beach is a perfect day or weekend trip - with options to camp or Airbnb in town to extend the trip. Some beaches will even allow you to make fires so gather your crew, head to the water and ring in the summer. Soak up some vital vitamin D and let the sand exfoliate and refresh your skin. The bonus? Going to the beach is a workout without even trying - walking on sand requires 1.6-2.5 times more mechanical work than walking on a hard surface at the same speed.

Go camping

Camping is one of the most timeless outdoor activities there is. There's so much variation that it's easy to customize the experience based on who you're with or what kind of trip you're looking for.  Feel like the old school option? Grab a couple of tents, your closest friends and rent a campsite at one of the National Parks throughout the country. In need of a pamper? Go for the glamping option - with spa accommodations in a wilderness setting. Feeling adventurous? If you have a big enough car, consider plopping a mattress in the back and hitting the road for a few days - you never know what you'll discover. Wherever you go, try to adopt a “leave no trace” attitude in regard to waste.
