Breast Cancer Awareness and the Importance of Green Skincare

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. This is a great time to look at your healthy habits and make sure that you are taking care of yourself!

First and foremost, it is vital that women screen for breast cancer by doing self-checks and getting mammograms after the age of forty (or even earlier, if you have a family history of breast cancer — be sure to check with your doctor). If a tumor is present, it is vital that it is examined as soon as possible so that any needed treatment can take place right away.

While we are all exposed to some carcinogens in daily life, it is absolutely important to recognize that there are some cancer-causing chemicals that we are exposed to needlessly and unknowingly. We all recognize that spending a lot of time in the sun with unprotected skin can lead to cancer-causing damage, but fewer of us know that the chemicals in some of our cosmetics and skincare — things we put on our body in order to protect and care for it — can cause cancer.

Chemicals commonly used in cosmetics, such as parabens and phalates are recognized as endocrine disruptors. When present in cosmetics, these substances are absorbed through the skin and begin to act within the body. Scientists continue to study their links to health issues such as miscarriages, premature births, birth defects, metabolic disease, bone density, and breast cancer. While scientists are not sure what level of chemical exposure poses a risk to human health, parabens have been identified in biopsy samples from breast tumors.

This is why Green Beauty is so important. We don’t have to put ourselves at risk with dangerous chemicals in order to look and feel our best. We can protect our skin and our bodies by using natural products with natural ingredients that are proven to benefit our health instead of damaging it. After all, we use those products so that we can look our best — it only makes sense that they should also help us to feel our best, since they will be absorbed through the skin and become part of our bodies.
