Tips On Transitioning Your Skincare Routine From Summer To Fall

Fall is officially here and with a change in seasons comes a change in weather, wardrobes, coffee preferences, and skincare -  requiring a re-evaluation of our daily practices and routines. Cold air can cause problems, leaving skin dead, dull and flakey if unaddressed.  Stay ahead of the weather with these tips to combat the cold and help you make a smooth transition from summer to fall.

Swap out your cleanser

While gel and foaming cleansers can be good for summer, they dry out your skin in colder months. Reach for an oil-based cleanser or cleansing milk like our Deeply Cleansing Milk with neem and chamomile, instead. They work to gently clear pores of dirt and oil while locking in moisture for hydration and glow.

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate

Exfoliation removes dead skin, brightens, reduces breakouts and evens tone. A scrub or peel at least once a week will increase cell turnover and keep your skin fresh and healthy, zapping any lasting effects from one too many days on the beach. Our Radiance Boosting Serum is great for getting your skin ready for a holiday glow.

Switch up your moisturizer

The cold air and brisk wind of autumn can leave skin lackluster, dull and flakey. That means it’s time for a heavier consistency lotion or cream - preferably one that includes ceramides or lipid-rich oils like sunflower seed oil. Remember to leave your skin slightly damp after cleansing so that the moisturizer will seal in the hydration and plump your skin.

Add retinol

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that works to unclog pores, boost collagen, increase cell turnover, even discoloration and smooth fine lines. It will also get rid of any brown spots you may have incurred from those UVB rays in July and August. You can get a non-prescription retinoid over the counter or go to your dermatologist for a prescription. The main difference is the concentration and the time it takes to notice a difference - a prescription product will work in 4-8 weeks while an over-the-counter one will take around 12.

Don't forget SPF

Protection is a year-round job. Even though UVB rays aren't as strong in the fall, UVA rays are and they're the ones that cause skin cancer and wrinkles so make sure you’re using sunscreen every day.

Watch your water temperature

Though it can be tempting to heat up showers when the weather gets chilly the steaming hot water can actually strip your skin of its natural oils. Warm water is fine however and more effective than cold. Some people rinse with cool water because they believe it seals pores but there’s no evidence for this.

Check your sheets

Our sheets can cause friction with our skin, irritating any dry or flaky spots. Think about switching to silk pillowcases for colder months - or year round. They are gentle on skin and hair as you sleep.

Good for every season

Always remember to moisturize your neck and high collarbone to keep the skin tone and texture even throughout. Drink a least eight 8 oz cups of water daily.
