The birds are chirping, the skies are looking blue, and we might even see buds peeking out on bare, brown branches. Spring has officially come to the northern hemisphere! The arrival of warmer weather inevitably means we want to shed our layers of clothing, bask in the warmth and make more of the days getting longer. Our skin is also going into transition with this change in weather. And just like we would change up our wardrobes and bring in lighter layers (we still need those layers!), our skincare routine too, could use a bit of a Spring cleaning.
With the arrival of Spring, we begin to see skin breaking out with allergic reactions, or due to a little more humidity in the air. Just as we are putting away heavier winter clothing, it’s time to lighten up on some of the skin care products we use. Here are some ways to Springify your beauty routine, one step at a time.
First, take a step back and look at your beauty shelf. Take a long, hard look at the sheet masks, face cleansers, exfoliators, and other skin care products you’ve used all winter. Ideally, you’ve tried these products, and you have a good idea if they should be tossed and never thought of again, or if you’ll keep them to use next year. Find a balanced face cleanser
With rising temperatures, our sweat glands become more active. As skin becomes a little stickier, dirt and grime find it easier to latch on, leading to a build-up, and possibly acne. While we’re not sweating buckets yet (hello summer humidity!), that little change means we need to start the first step of our skin care routine with a cleanser that removes the grime.
Traditionally, removing grime meant using soapy cleansers that lift off all the dirt, but also take skin’s natural moisturising components with it, leaving the face feeling taut and dry - a sign that the skin’s natural barrier is being compromised. So instead of reaching for the foam creating cleanser, use one that cleans effectively, but does not leave your skin feeling like sandpaper.
Do your research, find a cleanser that will not strip the skin of nutrients or moisture, but those that will help balance the oils in the skin. A good cleanser should leave your skin feeling clean and fresh, but not dry or oily, like a residue is still present on skin.

Our team at Poéthique swears by regular exfoliation, which is an important part of any skin care routine. Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells, and allows the pores to take in and absorb nutrients. Every 27 to 45 days skin cells die, then compact on the top layers of skin, making skin seem dull and rough to the touch. Exfoliation removes this top layer of dead skin cells, and makes the pores appear smaller by refining the top layers of the skin.
You can exfoliate weekly with a stronger peel, or, daily with a serum that contains low-levels of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs). We prefer the daily, mild approach to avoid the red-faced look after a strong peel. Either way, It’s a good idea to exfoliate at least 1-2 times a week for the best results. Use Face Masks
Masks are a great addition to a regular skin care routine, and wonderful for spot treatments, or addressing a specific concern. You could use mask powders, or sheet masks. While sheet masks are more convenient, we prefer mask powders as they are more sustainable from an environmental perspective.
A face mask that can help remove excess oil and impurities is a great way to clear warm weather breakouts. Since the days are warmer, but the nights can still be cold, indoor heating stays on in most offices and homes. There is a possibility that skin is still getting a little dehydrated as you sleep. A hydrating face mask before bedtime can help prevent dry feeling skin as we transition into warmer weather.
Ditch the heavy balms and creams and reach for a light, but fast- absorbing moisturizer during the warmer weather. Avoid a heavy moisturizer that will sit on your skin, as it can cause an uncomfortable mix of sebum, sweat, and moisturizer that can clog pores and cause breakouts. The face moisturizer should be light so it doesn’t leave any oily residue, but still prevents water loss and seals in nutrients. A moisturizer that contains active ingredients that address your specific skin concerns is a plus.
Incorporating face oils to your routine
If you’re using a face oil, get one that is a blend of various oils that will nourish your skin, while tackling any specific concerns like acne, spots, or uneven skin. While Spring weather still allows for the use of a face oil during the day, as the weather gets progressively warmer, it might be a good idea to save that face oil for night time use only. Listen to your skin. Most members of our team prefer to skip the moisturizer and use face oil all year round, but skin feel is a personal preference.
Finally, don’t forget your sunscreen as you begin to spend more time out in the warmer weather. A good sunscreen helps protect your skin from the sun’s harsh UVA and UVB rays. These rays speed up the aging process of skin and too much exposure can increase the risk of melanoma. We prefer physical sunscreens over chemical ones.
With these little changes, your skin should be ready for Spring, and you can step out to greet the sun with a glowing face, and a big smile!
