Vegetable Glycerin: Why You Need This Natural Skincare Solution

When "natural" appears in bold letters on natural skincare and beauty products do you glance at the ingredient list for those all-natural elements? And how often have your eyes moved right past one such universal ingredient: vegetable glycerin?

Most of us assume certain ingredients in beauty products are indispensable—they're part of the cost of product efficacy and shelf-stability in the modern world. In many cases, this is true--if we want products that last, we need to take these steps. And while it might not sound as sexy or exciting as other natural ingredients, vegetable glycerin is an important ingredient.

Unfortunately, for green beauty lovers, many products can contain a glycerin which has synthetic chemical origins, usually propylene or petroleum-based. Not something any green naturalista wants in her natural beauty products.

To counter this widely used chemical-based glycerine, natural vegetable glycerin has been developed from plant oils (typically palm, soy, or coconut oil). Glycerin is a principal constituent of these natural oils in the form of natural triglyceride mixtures where each triglyceride is composed of three fatty acids esterified with glycerin.

Synthetic glycerin, however, is produced through the distillation of petroleum products, mainly by adding chlorine to the topmost fraction of the distillate, propylene, followed by hydroxylation of trichloropropane. Sounds confusing? It is. And probably a good reason to opt for the natural alternative.

Contrary to chemical synthesis, vegetable glycerin is extracted by placing plant oils under combined effects of pressure, temperature, and water causing the ester bonds to break. The extract produced from such a treatment separates the glycerin, at which point the resulting fraction is further isolated by distillation to increase purity. Purified vegetable glycerin has a texture comparable to syrup due to its pure organic molecular composition. But unlike syrup, it doesn't leave your skin sticky or gooey--quite the contrary.
