Celebrating an Unusual Mother’s Day

Celebrating an Unusual Mother’s Day

This year’s Mother’s Day weekend is far from typical, not only in the United States but worldwide. There’s no getting around it. Normal Mother’s Day celebrations like going out to eat, finding gifts for mom, or even just spending time together unfortunately aren’t on the table. That doesn’t mean you can’t find ways to make the most of your mother’s special day, however, whether you’re near or far. These are the ways we’re staying connected and close to our family this May.

Being together, apart: Mother's Day Ideas & Activities

By this stage of social distancing, you’re likely familiar with any number of video calling platforms. And fortunately, your parents probably are as well. Whether you’re using Zoom (we recommend turning on the password-protected setting), Houseparty, Google Hangouts, or FaceTime, set a predetermined block of time to spend with mom May 10.

A call alone might be enough for your family! Speaking from experience, having all the family together at once can be very special in itself and a great way to honor mothers. To bring your celebration up to the next level, coordinate ahead of time to do the same thing, together, just over video.

This can mean any kind of different things; buying the same bottle of wine and making the same meal to eat together is one option. Put a new twist on making mom breakfast in bed by having everyone make breakfast in bed.

It might feel silly, but lean into it! These are unusual times we’re living in, and it helps to embrace into the craziness of it all.

Another thing you can do is share an activity. Games like Codenames or Scrabble are fairly easy to play remotely. Again, if it’s awkward, lean into it!

Another activity worth trying is both of you making your own DIY face mask at (your respective) homes! This article includes some great, simple recipes for all different uses. For one that’s extra moisturizing and good for all skin types, check out the Avocado, yogurt, and honey one. Mom (and you) can pair it nicely with our Radiance Boosting Face Serum.

(Someone’s) Homemade Touch: Gift Ideas

Looking for Mother's Day gift ideas? Right now, there are many small businesses still up and operating—like ours! Brick-and-mortars that rely on foot traffic and in-person purchases are particularly feeling the squeeze. If you can, support them! Think of all the local shops and your area and check if they’re doing some form of online orders (a businesses’ Facebook or Instagram page is a great place to start your research) or curbside pickups.

Many businesses may also be doing Mother’s Day specials that include extra-special touches. These go a long way to making a gift feel special.

Remember when you were a kid, and you didn’t have any money to buy your mom a gift, so you made her something, instead? That’s the feeling to evoke. Whether it’s something you made (like a mothers day card), or by a small craftsman, during social isolation a personal touch will bring a big smile to your mom’s face.

Get creative

Finally, if your mom lives close by, it’s still possible to visit. As long as you stay outside (within six feet, per CDC guidelines) and wear a face covering, there’s no harm in going over for a chat and/or to drop off a gift.

Here, too, is an opportunity. If you have kids, occupy them for a few hours  with a creative project like making different fun signs for their Grandma to read, or if they’re of the musical sort, sing songs.

Even though in-person celebration of mothers is currently limited, there’s always a chance to get creative and make the most of it.
